December 20, 2024 – Mirabel, Canada – Air Canada has strengthened its commitment to modern, fuel-efficient aviation by ordering five additional Airbus A220-300 aircraft. This announcement coincides with the fifth anniversary of the airline’s first A220 delivery in December 2019. With this latest order, Air Canada’s total A220-300 fleet will grow to 65 aircraft, cementing its role as a cornerstone of the carrier’s operations.

A Proven Asset for Air Canada’s Growth

Since entering service, the A220 has proven instrumental in Air Canada’s strategy, enabling the opening of new routes and enhancing service on existing ones. John Di Bert, Executive Vice President and CFO at Air Canada, highlighted the aircraft’s versatility and customer appeal:

“The A220 has delivered on its promises for Air Canada. It has the right economics to support our profitable growth strategy and is popular with our customers. We’re proud to expand our fleet with aircraft built in Mirabel, Quebec, supporting Canada’s aerospace sector.”

Partnership with Airbus

Airbus has been a key partner in Air Canada’s fleet modernization efforts. Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, emphasized the aircraft’s efficiency and passenger comfort:

“The A220 is the most efficient aircraft in its size category. We’re committed to supporting Air Canada as it renews its fleet and strengthens its network.”

Made in Canada, Flown Across the World

Assembled in Mirabel, Quebec, the A220 is a source of pride for the Canadian aerospace industry. Air Canada was the launch operator of the A220-300 in North America, and its fleet has since served over 70 destinations.

The A220 offers a cutting-edge combination of range, efficiency, and comfort. Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, it reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 25% per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft. The A220 is also compatible with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF compatibility across its fleet by 2030.

Air Canada’s Expanding Airbus Fleet

This new order reflects Air Canada’s ongoing relationship with Airbus. The airline’s fleet includes 134 Airbus aircraft, spanning the A320 and A330 families, as well as the A220-300. Air Canada also has 26 A321XLRs on order, demonstrating its commitment to maintaining a modern, efficient fleet.

The A220’s Growing Global Presence

As of November 2024, Airbus has secured nearly 900 orders for the A220, with close to 380 delivered to 23 operators worldwide. The aircraft’s global footprint includes more than 1,500 routes and over 460 destinations, reinforcing its position as a leader in the small single-aisle market.

With its combination of Canadian craftsmanship, innovative design, and environmental benefits, the A220 continues to be a pivotal asset for Air Canada and a testament to the future of aviation.
